Arroyo Fountain

The Arroyo Fountain is a historic neoclassical monument and roundabout landmark located directly in front of the Casa Real de Iloilo (the Old Iloilo Provincial Capitol) along Bonifacio Drive in Iloilo City Proper. Beyond its striking visual presence at the center of a busy traffic roundabout, the fountain officially serves as the Kilometer Zero benchmark for the entire Panay Island. This means all highway distances measured from Iloilo City to any other municipality across the Western Visayas region originate from this exact geographical spot, making it a critical landmark for local regional transit.

Designed by pioneering Filipino architect Antonio Toledo and completed in late 1927, the monument features an elegant centerpiece of four barefoot Grecian maidens (caryatids) standing back-to-back facing the cardinal directions. Together, they balance a large, circular upper water basin on their shoulders, while the lower base is ornately decorated with reliefs of mythical sea creatures, native fruits, and fish spouting water to celebrate Iloilo's agricultural and maritime abundance. Interestingly, the statues were originally unveiled half-naked, but due to pressure from the conservative Roman Catholic Church in 1929, they underwent subtle structural modifications to cover the figures in flowing, modest garments.

The fountain was originally erected to honor the legacy of Senator José María Arroyo, who authored the 1925 legislation that established the Iloilo Metropolitan Waterworks system. It occupies a 26.5-square-meter area where the provincial capitol's old flagpole once stood. Recognizing its outstanding architectural craftsmanship and deep civic identity, the National Museum of the Philippines officially designated the Arroyo Fountain and the adjacent Casa Real de Iloilo as an Important Cultural Property (ICP) in December 2022, cementing its status as an irreplaceable piece of Ilonggo heritage.
