General Martin T. Delgado Monument

The General Martin T. Delgado Monument is an iconic 8.8-meter-tall bronze equestrian statue located at the Festive Walk Parade, directly in front of the Casa de Emperador within the Iloilo Business Park in Mandurriao, Iloilo City. Formally unveiled on January 19, 2019, during the Dinagyang Festival, this majestic landmark serves as a major tribute to the greatest Visayan revolutionary hero of the late 19th century. The masterpiece was created by Ginés Serrán-Pagán, an award-winning Spanish contemporary sculptor, creating a profound historical irony where a Spanish artist immortalized the very man who fought to end Spanish rule in the Philippines. The casting process took over three years of meticulous preparation, beginning with clay molding and fiberglass casting before being finalized in heavy bronze, a classical production standard designed to last for millennia.

Historically, General Martín Teófilo Delgado, a native of Santa Barbara, Iloilo, was the vanguard of the Panay uprising against colonial forces in 1898. He established the Federal Republic of the Visayas, effectively liberating Iloilo, and later transitioned into civilian governance as the first governor of the province under the American administration. Today, the monument stands as the proud centerpiece of Park Square, beautifully framed by the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art (ILOMOCA). The surrounding open plaza offers a vibrant visitor experience, attracting flocks of friendly pigeons that tourists enjoy feeding during the daytime. As night falls, an illuminated water fountain activates around the base of the statue, transforming the entire square into a picturesque, romantic evening destination for locals and travelers alike.
